Format of U8 Development League

Players should not be allowed to begin to play until the Season of the 7th birthday. (In other words a player MUST turn 7 years of age during the season Sept-May to participate)

Rules and procedures of the Under 8 Development League shall be identical to that agreed for other age groups with the following exceptions;

Purpose.  Managers are reminded that the purpose of the Under 8 Development League is to encourage as many players as possible of all abilities to begin to learn to play football in a friendly and supportive environment.

Registration. Teams may register a maximum of 12 players.

Format of Matches. Games shall be 20 minutes each way. Managers may mutually agree to slightly extend the half time interval to allow a short period of coaching e.g. 5 minutes.  The official score of the match shall be recorded as that reached at the end of second 20 minute period.  Managers may also mutually agree to play an additional informal and short period of play to allow as many players as possible to experience team football.  However, in any event, no single player shall be on the field of play for more than 40 minutes in total.

Minor Rule Changes.  Balls used shall be size 3 (in line with FA Guidance). Goalkeepers may, if they wish, take goal kicks by holding the ball in their hands.  Players shall not be penalised for foul ‘throw ins’. Rather, the referee shall demonstrate the correct technique and provide a further opportunity to the player. (see FA Guidance)

Recording of Results.  Results shall be submitted in the normal way by the standard deadline. These score shall be recorded by the League. These will be used the following season to grade teams when they reach Under 9 level. However, no Under 8 league table will be published. Each team will be provided with a supply of commemorative medals at the end of the season to reward the contribution and effort of every player.
